Major Events for 2009

Spring MoonWatch
This national observing event will run from Saturday 28 March through Sunday 05 April 2009. The week will offer good opportunities for viewing the first quarter Moon and also the planet Saturn. It is anticipated that many events organised by local astronomical societies, science centres etc will take place during this week.

Autumn MoonWatch
 
This will take place from from Saturday 24 October through Sunday 01 November 2009.  The week will offer good opportunities for viewing the first quarter Moon and also the planet Jupiter and the Galilean satellites. It is anticipated that many events organised by local astronomical societies, science centres etc will take place during this week.

Telescope400
Celebrating the first observations of the Moon through a telescope by Thomas Harriot in 1609, this one-day event will take place at Syon Park on Sunday 26 July 2009, and will feature opportunities to view our local star, the Sun, along with workshops and lectures on Thomas Harriot.
 
United Nations endorses IYA2009
The United Nations 62nd General Assembly proclaimed 2009 the International Year of Astronomy. This follows the earlier endorsement by UNESCO and so the year may now be said to be truly official. Further details can be found at http://www.astronomy2009.org/

What is the International Year of Astronomy 2009?
The International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) is an exciting global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture. Coinciding with the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s first glimpses through a telescope and the birth of modern astronomy, it gives people all over the world the chance to get involved in this fascinating science and experience the wonders of the night time sky.

Talk on IYA2009 by Professor Ian Robson at NAM2007
This is a powerpoint presentation of a talk by Professor Ian Robson, the Chair of the UK Steering Committee and the UK Single Point of Contact for the International Year of Astronomy 2009, to the National Astronomy Meeting, held at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston, in April 2007.

It describes the aims of IYA2009, suggestions as to what events might take place, who should be involved and what has been done so far in terms of the UK organisation.
