For some of the students attending Autumn MIST, this will be your very first conference! While this can be really exciting, this can also be a really daunting experience if you don’t know what to expect. Here are a few tips to get you started and to know what to expect:
- Plan ahead. It can feel much less intimidating travelling and attending a conference if you know where you have to be and when. Talk to your supervisor and make sure all your registration and travel plans are in place for the day. If you don’t have to worry about getting there, then it’s one less thing to worry about.
- Look at the schedules ahead of time. The schedules and abstract books have now been released (see attached). Take the time to familiarise yourself with these and decide what talks and posters are of interest to you that you definitely would like to have a chat with the authors about. This will allow you to get the most of the poster sessions and 1 to 1 discussions.
- Practice an “elevator pitch”. If you find talking to new people an uncomfortable experience, then it may be worth practicing an elevator pitch. It is common at conferences to be asked about what you do and your area of research. It may help this feel like a less intimidating question if you already know roughly how you can answer.
- Don’t be afraid to talk with people. The advantage of attending a smaller, national conference like MIST is that you get a feel for what conferences are like and you can chat with everyone from students up to more senior members of the community. The key piece of advice here is talk to people, start conversations and ask questions.
- The pub. After events such as Autumn MIST, it is usually the case that people move to a local pub once the conference has finished. Please do not feel intimidated by this. Everyone is more than welcome to come along and it is a really great platform to get to know people and have some more informal discussions. The official pub for Autumn MIST is The King’s Head (W1S 4RX).
If you still feel nervous about attending, then please know that this is completely okay! You are welcome to join the MIST Buddies scheme (https://forms.gle/cv8mwRYK98wZnQuQ8) if you would like a partner on the day to help you around. If you have any other questions, queries or concerns, no matter how big or small, you can contact myself (Sophie Maguire, student representative,This email address is being protected from spambots.
